Equine Physiotherapy

All horses and ponies can benefit from veterinary physiotherapy to help maintain mobility and suppleness and enhance performance. Physiotherapy can provide relief from pain and dysfunction associated with chronic conditions and also assists in rehabilitation following injury. These benefits are the same whether you own a geriatric pony or athletic competition horse.

Indications for veterinary physiotherapy

  • Post-surgical / injury rehabilitation

  • Treatment and management of chronic conditions (e.g. osteoarthritis) – importance of regular physiotherapy to treat compensations and maintain maximum mobility and wellbeing

  • Loss of performance / ridden issues such as favouring one rein,

     disunited in canter, jumping issues

  • Toe dragging

  • Stiffness

  • Saddle fit issues, saddle slipping

  • Poor posture

  • Muscle loss / asymmetry

  • Temperament or behavioural changes

  • Lameness past or present

  • Regular maintenance treatments

 

Conditions which may benefit from physiotherapy

  • Muscular dysfunction – strains, tears, atrophy

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Neck / back pain

  • Sacroiliac dysfunction / pain

  • Overriding dorsal spinous processes (kissing spines)

  • Tendon / ligament injury

  • Neurological conditions

  • Post-operative or conservative management of diagnosed conditions
